the mindful dancer method

The only way out is in (Thich Nhat Hanh)

The Mindful Dancer Method is an invitation to turn inward to move outward with authenticity. Through mindfulness, movement, and coaching, it helps dancers cultivate presence, navigate pressure, and express their unique artistic voice in a sustainable way.

My Story

Dance has shaped my life for as long as I can remember. As a professional dance artist, I have experienced both the beauty and the demands of an environment that often calls for constant performance, resilience and perfection.

At a certain point in my journey, I realised I needed to become more grounded, as I was at risk of losing myself in the pursuit of perfectionism. It was then that I encountered contemplative practice and coaching, which helped me reconnect with myself beyond performance.

I began sharing these tools with colleagues, and later developed my academic research on the subject during my Master’s. This became a turning point that led me to formally train as a meditation facilitator and coach.

Over more than ten years of practice, working with dancers, and ongoing research, this work has evolved into what is now the Mindful Dancer Method. It has since been shared in leading dance institutions, including Rambert School, Trinity Laban, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, the Institute of the Arts Barcelona, and professional dance companies as Equilibrio Dinamico.

It is the approach I wish I had had earlier in my career: a holistic way of working that supports dancers in cultivating presence, navigating pressure and sustaining a meaningful connection to their art and themselves.

Today, my mission is to support dancers in developing not only as performers, but as people—building sustainable and grounded careers that remain authentically connected to who they are.

the pillars of the method

The Mindful Dancer Method is grounded in a set of core pillars that support both artistic development and personal wellbeing. These pillars explore how dancers think, communicate and relate to themselves across training, creation, and performance. Through the integration of mindfulness, movement and coaching tools, they cultivate presence, awareness and resilience, supporting a more sustainable and authentic way of dancing and living.

research and publications

Livia’s work bridges artistic practice, contemplative practice, coaching and academic research, contributing to the ongoing conversation around dancer wellbeing, creativity and sustainable performance.

Her research has been published in leading publications, including the Journal of Dance and Somatic Practices, the IADMS Bulletin (published by the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science), and One Dance UK. She has also presented her research at conferences hosted by Northern School of Contemporary Dance and Central School of Ballet, sharing evidence-informed approaches to supporting dancers’ physical, mental and artistic development.

Since 2021, Livia has been collaborating with Rambert School as a researcher and guest teacher. Through an experimental academic research project with students at Rambert School, she explored the role of contemplative practices in supporting dancers’ awareness, wellbeing and performance. Following this research, and in collaboration with Head of Studies Phaedra Petsilas, she developed the Meditation for Dancers course, which is now embedded within the school’s curriculum, providing students with practical tools to cultivate presence, self-awareness and a sustainable approach to their artistic practice.
